HIRA ISMAIL
SEED Artist-In-Residence
Summer 2024
What is at the core of your work?
I feel a spiritual connection to God and the larger world when I'm making art. It's why I do it.
What do you believe your role is as an artist?
To create new possibilities for our world is my role as an artist. August Boal spoke of theatre as a rehearsal for revolution. I take that as a guiding point in my work.
What about your work is interesting, important, meaningful, unique, impactful, or memorable?
Devising movement/dance in dialogue with poetry and script is what makes my work meaningful. I remember first hearing the word dance theatre and feeling incredible, like yes, that makes sense to me! I love intersecting forms of art and playing around and against genre; it is like a reflection of my own life navigating intersecting identities. The defiance it takes to live as you are is often a theme in my art and I believe that makes it memorable. I hope in seeing these stories played out, more people are able to see the possibilities in their own lives.
