Steven Redondo

 2024 SEED Artist-In-Residence

Steven, a resident of Phoenix, Arizona, has built a distinguished professional artistic career through collaborations with many local organizations. His journey in the world of dance began in high school, igniting a passion that led him to pursue education at Arizona State University for a couple of years. Steven’s professional career took off when he started showcasing his solo work at Experimental Art Nights with [nueBox]. His initial pieces, titled “One,” “Two,” and “Three,” were innovative explorations of audience engagement and improvisational skills. By 2019, Steven presented his seventh work, “Seven,” at the Blaktinx showcase, held at Phoenix Center for the Arts. In 2020, his choreographic work “Eight,” was featured on the Breaking Ground main stage, making his first piece designed for two dancers. The pandemic brought a temporary lull in Steven’s creative energy, but he soon found inspiration through collaboration. This period also marked the beginning of a new chapter in Steven’s artistic journey as he began curating “In The Round,” an intimate dance showcase presented at various venues across the valley. As “In the Round" establishes itself as a staple performance in Phoenix, Steven envisions expanding the showcase to different cities and even globally. His goal is to provide an accessible space where audiences and performers can share moments of art and community. Outside of curating events, Steven continues to share his work with anyone who is eager to be a part of the experience.

What is at the core of your work?

During my artistic career, I lean heavily into abstract and ambient work, dependent on open interpretations and improvisation. Recently, I have been more open to being vulnerable and sharing stories that align with my personal experiences. Really, the human experience. With that in mind, my work's core combines my love for abstract dance and my newfound comfort with storytelling.

What do you believe your role is as an artist?

My role as an artist is to be a source of opportunity. Creating space for dancers to express their artistry, has been very fulfilling. This same opportunity is also given to the rest of the community, to witness what artists are willing to share.

What do people experience when viewing your work and what does it look like?

Something new yet familiar. Although I have enjoyed creating abstract work, I also want audience members to feel connected to the work in some way. If a single person says that they felt disconnected from the work, or that they didn't get it, I did not do my job.

All of my work pulls from modern and contemporary movement practices. Incorporating elements of improvisation and reactionary parameters. Reactionary parameters are almost always through sound, to inspire the theme or mood for the entire piece. Outside of my own personal movement practices, I am constantly inspired by pedestrian movement patterns and interactions, as a way to create relatable material when performing in front of an audience.
